About the album

Gregorius Josephus Werner (1695-1766)
Pro Adventu

Gregor Werner (1695-1766) began directing the fortunes of the Esterházy court band, the Hofkapelle, on 10 May 1728. He was an industrious man. Forty Masses, three Requiems, three Te Deums, four
Offertories, twelve Vespers, twelve Good Friday oratorios, approximately eighteen oratorios, a hundred and thirty-three antiphons and a multitude of instrumental pieces and minor works testify to his fertile creative spirit.

Little is known of his youth. He is sure to have spent an lengthy period in Vienna. The quodlibets “Bauren- Richters-Wahl” and “Der Wienner- ische Tandelmarkt” demonstrate an intimate knowledge of the Viennese background and spoken dialect in the Late Baroque period. His skilful counterpoint style suggests a connec- tion to the Court Kapellmeister J.J. Fux (1660-1741).
Werner seems to have found utter fulfilment in his work for the princely band. It seems he did not undertake any further travels. Isolated in the eastern region of the empire he wrote one musical gem after another. His oeuvre reveals the early a-capella style as well as the Baroque concer- tante style of the turn of the century.
As with Fux, there are no “lazy parts” in his counterpoint settings.

Throughout his life he remained true to the idiom of Baroque music-making and refused to adapt in any way to new fashions. Thus it is no wonder that he is supposed to have spoken disparagingly of Joseph Haydn as “G`sanglmacher” – “common songwriter” – and “Modehansl” – fashion lackey.

Nevertheless Haydn’s regard for this famous master was so high that he worked during the last months of his life on the edition and publishing of Werner’s quartets! What a delight that Werner's music is dusted off now by Ars Antiqua Austria!

In the "Magic Flute" recording under Rene Jacobs he is the 1st boy. He made concert tours all over the world with the "Sängerknaben", to whom he is still committed today. As a soprano soloist, he has enjoyed great success on the podiums of international concert halls (among others, he sang the soprano solo in Mahler's 4th Symphony in the Salzburg Festival Hall; Role of Yniold in "Pelleas et Melisande"). He was a soloist at "Christmas in Vienna", a 30-minute documentary about him was broadcast on the ORF and in ARTE. His career in the countertenor continued almost without interruption: he sang at the opening gala of the new opera house Vladivostok, at the New Year's Eve concert of the Mozarteum Orchestra at the Grand Festspielhaus, in operas (Orlofsky in the "Bat", Apollo in "Apollo et Hyacinthus") and Oratorios (Daniel in "Susanna" under Martin Haselböck in the large Musikvereinssaal). In December 2016 he was an alto soloist in Bach's Christmas Oratorio (Munich, Herkulessaal) and in the B Minor Mass (Großer Musikvereinssaal). As a result of many years of collaboration with the ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria (Gunar Letzbor), his voice from the age of choirs until today is documented on numerous CD recordings with predominantly Austrian baroque music. In addition, to date four solo CDs by Alois with Franz Farnberger have appeared on the piano (opera and operetta arias, songs, duets). His special love is also the song song. Together with his piano partner Franz Farnberger he has already given numerous recitals (among others in the Crystal Hall Waidhofen, at the Bruckner Days in St. Florian and in the Brucknerhaus Linz). His unmistakable, supple and versatile vocal sound also enables him a broad repertoire that is unusual for countertenors, from Schubert to Richard Strauss. In addition to his vocal work, he completed acting studies in Linz.

Gunar Letzbor (conductor)

Gunar Letzbor studied composition, conducting and violin at Linz, Salzburg and Cologne. His encounters with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Reinhard Goebel ignited a deep passion for period instruments and performance practice, leading him to perform extensively with Musica Antiqua Köln, the Clemencic Consort, La Folia Salzburg, Armonico Tributo Basel and the Wiener Akademie.  Gunar Letzbor founded his own ensemble, Ars Antiqua Austria, an instrumental ensemble of varying size dedicated in particular to the exploration of the rich, but neglected, baroque repertoire of his native country and its neighbours. Corollaries of this voyage of re-discovery have been not only the unexpected finds of musical masterpieces otherwise destined to languish in obscurity, but also the articulation of a uniquely central-European instrumental sound and its...

Corollaries of this voyage of re-discovery have been not only the unexpected finds of musical masterpieces otherwise destined to languish in obscurity, but also the articulation of a uniquely central-European instrumental sound and its often deeply spiritual inspiration. As a soloist and with Ars Antiqua Austria, Letzbor has made numerous recordings (including several world premieres), featuring works by Mozart, Bach, Biber, Muffat, Aufschnaiter, Viviani, Schmelzer, Weichlein, Vejvanovsky, Vilsmayr and Conti. Particulary remarkable was his world's premiere recording of Sonate for violin solo by J.J.Vilsmayr and J.P.Westhoff.
